Adjutant General of the Army
Washington D. C.

General
I have the honor to report that
the Indian prisoners have been counsel-
ling together for more than two weeks
with a view of sending a talk to Washing-
ton in refference to their condition. A few
evenings ago they notified me of their de-
sire to make a talk, and all gathered in
one of the casemates, when they put
forward "Making Medicine" to speak
for the young men first, and Minimic
to follow in behalf of the old men.

Mr. Fox interpreted, and I wrote
down what they had to say, which is here
given in their own words. "Making Medicine"
said "I have learned to sing the Saviors
hymns, & have given myself to Him.
Heretofore I have led a bad life on the
Plains, wandering around, living in a house
made of skins. I have now learned something
about the Great Spirits road and want to
learn more. We have lived in this old
place two years. It is old and we are
young. We are tired of it. We want to
go away from it anywhere. We want Wash-
ington go give us our wives and children
our fathers and mothers, & send us some

1. It is not known who penned this copy of Pratt's letter. It should be noted, however, that the copyist signed the letter "R. H. Platt" rather than Pratt. The biographical details of the signer match the biographical details of Richard Henry Pratt (see Who Was Who in Native American History by Carl Waldman, 1990, p.285-6) who later founded Carlisle Indian Industrial School.

2. For more on Pratt, see the Handbook of Texas Online.
