Articles of Agreement made and entered into this first day of May
A. D. eighteen hundred and seventy-three, by Edward P. Smith, Commissioner of
Indian Affairs, for and in behalf of the United States, of the first part, and H. O. Armour, Phillip
D. Armour, and John Plankinton
doing business under the name and style of Armour, Plankinton, and Co., in the city of New York

1. Edward Parmelee Smith served as Commissioner of Indian Affairs from 1873-1875. For more on Smith, see Handbook of North American Indians, volume 4, p. 685.

2. The Armours and Plankinton owned Armour, Plankinton & Co., a grain company in New York City. The Armours later established Armour  Brothers Meat Packing which later became Armour and Company.
