Copy Extract

Fort Marion St Augustine
Sept 23rd 1876

Lt Col J W Forsyth
Mil Sec Chicago, Ill.
Sir
I have the honor to report the
Indians in a satisfactory condition
in every respect. A more carefully
obedient, and better behaved lot of
men I have never known. The
facilities for teaching them, have
been increased, and there is no lack
of interest on their part. The ad-
vancement they make, more than
meet our expectations

Very Respectfully,
                     Your Obdt. Servt.
Signed           R H Platt
                     1st Lieut. 10th Cavalry
             In charge of Indian prisoners

1. It is not known who penned this copy of Pratt's letter. It should be noted, however, that the copyist signed the letter "R. H. Platt" rather than Pratt. The biographical details of the signer match the biographical details of Richard Henry Pratt (see Who Was Who in Native American History by Carl Waldman, 1990, p.285-6) who later founded Carlisle Indian Industrial School.

2. James W. Forsyth was an 1856 West Point graduate who served with the Union Army during the Civil war. He later served as aide-de-camp and military secretary to Philip H. Sheridan from 1869 to 1878.
