President George W. Austin of the Oklahoma College for Women.Dr. Lewis’ early memories of OCW centered mainly upon President G. W. Austin, whose dynamic leadership from 1914 to 1926 constituted the beginnings of an institutional saga. During those years, the number of buildings increased from two to seven, the size of the campus grew from twenty to forty-five acres, and the enrollment doubled from about 300 to 600 students. In 1920, the college was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. By the time of his death in 1926, he had made OCW into a national institution.

In 1958, Anna Lewis shared her early memories of the college in a letter to Sarah Ellis, Director of Public Relations, written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of OCW. She recalled that President Austin had a 25-year plan which included a number of new buildings, with a library building to be located in the center of the mall. She remembered that President Austin liked people, and liked to have them visit him. “Many is the evening that I have walked up to his house for a game of pitch. While in his office he was never too busy to talk about the problem you had in your personal life as well as professional affairs.”
